Thoughts from Rodrigo

I remember in the college (Byam Shaw, Central Saint Martins) the discussions about the power of not knowing and I think this is very strong in our practices.

This not knowing is very related to the experimental and the unsconsiouss and very different from conceptual artists who already know and have everything projected on how the work will be. We, on the other hand, allow ourselves the experimentation and process and I think this is very different from the art market ruled world, where artists work like factories, producing pret-a-porter works to feed a hungry desire of wealthy but not-so-interested-in-the-art collectors.

I do think the way we work is political and sao paulo biennial statement confirms this.

I feel my work totally concerned to how we experience art today. Right now in Brazil I'm working in different strategies than in London. Here, in the biennial of são paulo (this year very focused on the audio-visual and also the political implications of the work of art) I'm participating of lectures, workshops and special nights where the discursive aspects of contemporary practices are more appreciated than the aesthetic ones. But it is a matter of time till we see the final exhibition in September. I think they're taking hard on this political, critical and theoretical approach but in the end we'll have all sorts of works of art.

I agree when we try to run from the YBA's attitude, but I also think this is already old. I feel our group more concerned with the focus on the process rather then the final concept or final answers to the public. As this biennial's curators says:
"Dos Anjos and Farias look at art as a field of knowledge that can teach us about something in the world that cannot be talked about in any other way, changing the way we see the world. They are aware that the topic Art & Politics is not a novelty, not even in Brazil. But, as they pointed out, they are particularly interested in recovering the aspect of experimentation as a political factor. And beside the activist, conceptual approaches there will be works of manifest tangibility and poetical materiality. The curators confessed that they are always keen on inserting some sort of literary references. The art sector has developed a language of its own that appears very hermetic to people who do not belong to it, and beyond that, the concepts are often applied mechanically. Frauke Materlik

Frauke Materliks Arbeiten bestehen aus dreidimensionalen Konstruktionen und Fotografie. Sie schafft Konstruktionen, die sowohl als Rahmen für ihre Performances, als auch als eigenständige Arbeiten funktionieren. Es sind fiktionale Landschaften zwischen Materialität und Immaterialität. Als ausgebildete Landschaftsarchitektin schafft die Künstlerin mit interventionen und kommuniziert mit dem umliegenden Raum. Die Grenzen zwischen realem Raum und Fiktion, zwischen Innen und Aussen werden aufgelöst.

Frauke Materliks works consist of three-dimensional structures and photography. She creates installations that function both as a framework for performances, as well as independent works. There are fictional landscapes that oscillate between materiality and immateriality. As a trained landscape architect, the artist works with interventions and communicates with the surrounding area.

Maurice Citron

Maurice Citron erforscht in seiner Arbeit eine skulpturale Sprache, die auf den Prozess und die Materialität basiert. Die Lesart der Arbeit liegt in ihrer Machart. Der Künstler ist fasziniert von der Fähigkeit von Materialien und Objekten eine zeitliche Qualität eines Prozesses auszustrahlen. Er versucht Gewohnheitsmässiges zu vermeiden und hält stattdessen Augenmerk auf gedankelose Momente, Improvisationen und Entfallenes: das ist der Moment wo sich Dinge auftun können. Die Objekte bewegen zum Unbekannten und haben eine absurde, improvisierte Qualität.

Maurice Citron explores in his work a sculptural language based on the process and materiality. The reading of the work lies in its style. The artist is fascinated by the ability of the materials and objects to emit a temporal quality of the process. He tries to avoid the habitual and insists instead on focusing on thoughtless moments, improvisations and the escaped: this is the moment where things can open up. The objects move to the unknown and have an absurd, improvised quality.

Catrine Bodum

Catrine Bodum ist Malerin und arbeitet grossflächig und abstrakt. Als Ausgangspunkt ihrer Arbeiten dienen ihr oft Musikstücke (Minimal Music). Bewegung, Raum, Zeit und Rhythmus sind zentrale Themen. Die Bilder haben eine starke, physische Präsenz. Dies ist wohl auch auf ihre Vorgeschichte als Tänzerin zurückzuführen. Überreste und Spuren. Die Künstlerin beschreibt ihre Arbeit folgnedermassen: Ein Ort der übrigbleibt, wenn vergangene Handlungen neue Handlungen und Spuren von etwas Geschehenem das Auge dahin führen, was danach passiert ist.

Catrine Bodum is a painter and works mainly large scale and abstract. Music (usually repetitive or minimal) often serves as a starting point for her work. Movement, space, time and rhythm are central themes. The images have a strong, physical presence. This is probably due to her background as a dancer. Remains and traces, the artist describes her work as such: A place where past actions affect new actions and traces of something happened is left to lead the eye up to what happened after.

Rodrigo Garcia Dutra

Rodrigo Garcia Dutra spielt mit Licht, Architektur und urbane Landschaften durch Video-Projektionen von Natur aus 3-dimensional in ihrer Konzeption und Realisation. Seine Arbeit zielt darauf ab, die Grenzen zwischen Videokunst und Skulptur zu überqueren. Das Video ist in der Regel innerhalb oder auf einer instellation projiziert (in der Regel mit gefundenen, recycelten oder billigen Materialien), die, abgesehen davon, integraler Bestandteil des Werkes, seine 3-dimensionale Konnotationen erhöht. Manchmal ist die Arbeit von Sound bereichert. Seine Werke kreieren oft die Illusionen der unendlichen Räume und zeitlos, nicht-dimensionalen Architekturen, in denen die Präsenz von rhythmischem Sound die Dynamik der "neu erstellten" Räume erweckt.

Rodrigo Garcia Dutra plays with light, urban architecture and natural landscapes through video projections inherently 3-dimensional in their conception and realization. His work aims to cross the boundaries between video art and sculpture. The video is usually projected within or on an installation (usually made with found, recycled or cheap materials), which, besides being integral part of the work, enhances its 3-dimensional connotations. Sometimes the work is enriched by sound. His works often create the illusions of infinite and temporal spaces, non-dimensional architectures, where the presence of a rhythmical sound evokes the dynamic of the ‘recreated' spaces."

Anthony Lyttle

Anthony Lyttle verwendet teils sehr filigranes Papier für seine grossflächigen, abstrakten Zeichnungen. Seine Arbeiten basieren auf der Repetition von Zeichen (mark-making), aus diesen Zeichen entstehen dichte, energiegeladene Bilder, die an Grosstädtgewirr erinnern.

Anthony Lyttle uses some very delicate paper for his large-area, abstract drawings. His works are based on the repetition of characters (mark-making), out of these characters arise dense, energetic images that recall the tumults of the city.

Beate Frommelt

Beate Frommelt arbeitet mit Zeichnung und Malerei, die in Beziehung mit dem Raum treten. Sei es durch Objekte oder Konstruktionen, die Elemente aus den Bildern aufgreifen, sei es durch Zeichnung und Malerei direkt auf Wände oder Boden des Ausstellungsräums. Zum Teil werden die Zeichnungen auch projeziert um die Arbeit begehbar und erlebbar zu machen.

Beate Frommelt works with drawings and paintings which enter into a relationship with the surrounding space. Be it through objects or structures, that pick up on elements from the drawings, or be it by drawing and painting directly onto walls or the floor of the showrooms. Some of the drawings are also projected in order to make the work physically accessible and tangible.
